Scientific Name: Coccoloba uvifera. Common name: 'Sea Grape'. An erect tree that grows to about 25 ft (8 m) tall. Native to southern Mexico (including Yucatan) and Belize. The fruit grows in clusters and can be eaten raw, made into jelly or made into wine. It is an excellent ornamental tree for coastal areas because of its resistance to high winds, salty conditions, and drought. It grows well in sandy, rocky, or broken coral soils near tidewater areas but it also grows well inland. This tree is easy to grow from seeds and can be used as a landscape tree urban environments. The fruit is eaten by numerous wildlife species, especially birds and small rodents. Easy to grow from seeds. The wood can be used in furniture making. In traditional medicine, parts of the bark is used for things like throat ailments and roots are used for dysentery.
