Scientific Name: Annona squamosa. Common names: 'Sugar Apple' or Sweetsop. A small deciduous tree with a mature height of up to about 20 feet. Native to Central America. One of the most common of the Annona species the small (2-4"), knobby fruit has soft, creamy white flesh and is usually eaten fresh or used to make beverages and shakes. Easy to grow from seed. The plant generally adapts well to a variety of soil types and can be used as landscape tree in tropical regions. It makes an excellent conatiner specimen, so in cooler regions it can be used as a great patio or house plant. In some parts of Central America it is considered to have medicinal properties is used by the local traditional medicine practitioners. Also offers fantastic bonsai possibilities!
