Scientific Name: Piper amalago. Common name: 'buttonwood'. This is a slender much branched perennial shrub related to the pepper plant. Highly respected as a medicine plant in Belize and popular for its use in treatment of things like aches, pains, rheumatism, swellings, skin conditions, fatigue and sleeplessness. Grown primarily for its leaves, but the roots are also used. As an ornamental, it it can be a beautiful follage plant and makes a great backdrop for any garden. Easily grown from seeds.
