Scientific Name: Pereskia aculeata. Common names: 'Barbados Gooseberry' but also called Mexican Lemon Cactus and Barbados Shrub. This is a tropical cactus that is drought-tolerant and needs little or no care in the garden or landscape. Native to tropical America (West Indies, Central America and northern South America). Commonly cultivated by means of cuttings but it is easy to grow from seeds. It can grow up to 3 metres in height but can also be kept pruned into a bushy shrub. It has woody stems, fleshy, pale green leaves, and creamy orange to pinkish flowers followed by yellow fruit. The fruit has a mild pleasant flavour and is great in jams, preserves and desserts. A beautiful plant that likes full sun and dry conditions.
