Scientific Name: Sapindus saponaria. Common names: Soapberry Tree, Soapseed Tree. A small to medium-sized tree native to tropical America. The pulp of the fruits, when rubbed in water, gives a lather, like soap, and the fruits are sometimes employed as a substitute for soap. The fruit contains saponin, a natural detergent which can be used to clean clothes. It is a useful and popular alternative to manufactured, chemical detergents in the rural areas of Belize and Central America. It is drought tolerant tree and is easily cared in the landscape. Easy to grow from seeds.
