Scientific Name: Passiflora quadrangularis. Common Name: Giant Granadilla. This is a lovely passiflora species with very fragrant flowers and large edible fruit. In cultivation it is grown primarily for the fruit but the flowers are quite showy. It needs space a large vigorous vine that can grow up to 40 feet in one growing season. Sometimes called the Passion Melon, its edible fruit can be up to 12 inches long and is the largest of all Passiflora varieties. In Belize it is sometimes used as a medicine for treating head colds and high blood pressure. Rare in cultivation. to grow from seeds. Excellent as a larval food plant for certain butterflies.
