Scientific Name: Anacardium occidentale. Common name: Cashew Nut Tree. Famous worldwide for its delicious nuts, the Cashew is fast growing tropical tree grown in tropical countries for its pear shaped fruits and the edible Cashew nuts. It is easy to grow from seeds. The fruit, called the cashew apple, ripens into a yellow and/or red structure about the size of a apple or pear. It can be eaten raw or made into chutney, jam or various beverages including wine and a distilled liquor. The tree is a fast grower that can reach 25 foot height and should produce fruit in 3 to 4 years from seeds. The Cashew tree is an excellent Bonsai subject. The cashew nut is edible, delicious roasted, and is the basis for much commercial activity in the tropical countries.
