Scientific Name: Mucuna pruriens. Common Name(s): 'Velvet Bean, Nescafe Coffee Bean, Sea Bean'. A climbing woody vine (liana) from the rainforests of Central America with purple flowers. The seed pods, about 4 inch long, are covered with very small velvety hairs. The seeds are often collected and made into lovely necklaces and bracelets. Has many uses in traditional medicine. The toasted ground seeds are used as a coffee substitute. It is a very prolific and hardy vine and is used for weed control and soil building applications. Easy to grow from seeds and is easily cared in the garden or landscape.
