Scientific Name: Lablab purpureus. Common name: ' Hyacinth Bean' . Synonyms: Dolichos lablab. This is an attractive vine that bears showy lavender to purple pea-like flowers. After the flowers fade, the show continues as bright purple beans grow in clusters above the foliage. Native to India but commonly grown in tropical regions all over the world. It can grow to about 30 feet in length and is an excellent trouble free landscape vine for covering trellises, walls, or fences. Grown primarily as a food crop all parts of the plant are edible: the pods, leaves, flowers, dried seeds,sprouted seeds and the roots. As a medicine plant, it has many documented uses as a herbal medicine plant. It is easy to grow from seeds. The fruit is eaten by numerous wildlife species, especially birds and small rodents.
