Scientific Name: Opuntia sp. Common Name: 'Prickly Pear' Cactus. Native to Mexico and Central America. Commonly cultivated in dry tropical or subtropical regions for it's delicious and attractive fruit called Prickly Pears and for the leaf pads called Napales. This variety, with the white fruit, is known as "tuna blanco" or "white fig" in Mexico. A robust and hardy plant that will need plenty of space. It is easy to grow from seeds. Edible fruits are the source for the cactus jelly and cactus candy commonly sold as tourist items.
