Scientific Name: Carica papaya. Common Name: 'wild papaya'. This is a fast growing small succulent-type fruit tree that can grow up to 12 to 15 foot tall. Native to Belize, Central America and northern South America. It is a heavy producer of miniture golf-ball sized fruit. The fruit is an eagerly consumed by children, birds and small animals. Easy to grow from seed the seeds will germinate in 30 to 60 days and the plants will bloom and produce fruit in three to four years. It is common pioneer plant in the rainforest. The unripe green fruit produces an enzyme, called papaina, which is used as a meat tenderizer. like the commercial papaya, the fruit is an excellent source of vitamin A, B, C, and G, as well as it is great for digestion.
