Scientific Name: Calyptrogyne gheisbreightiana. Common name: not known. An attractive shade loving species with large handsome leaves commonly used as an ornamental. It can be truly spectacular as a pot-plant when a new "red"leaf emerges. It is a dwarf stemless, shade-loving palm, with clumping stems and irregularly divided feathery leaves. The new emerging leaf has a beautiful chocolate/reddish or copper color for its first few weeks of life. Then it turns dark green. Native to rainforests of Belize and Central America where it grows as an under story palm. In cultivation, it can be irresistibly magnificent in group plantings, with other plants, in tropical or subtropical patio or courtyard settings to obtain a tropical jungle motif. Plant in fast draining soil and place palm out of direct sunlight.
