Scientific Name: Hamelia patens. Common Names: firebush, scarlet bush, polly red head, red head and hummingbird bush. A fast growing shrub that can reach up to 25 foot tall and puts out brilliant displays of showy bright orange scarlet flowers. It is great for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. Native to tropical America but is widely cultivated throughout the tropical regions and has become naturalized in many areas. It is easily grown from seeds. It likes full sun and very well-drained soil. It is an excellent xeriscape plant that is drought tolerant and easily cared in the garden or landscape. Firebush does not have a dormant period it will grow and flower year around depending on the weather. In Belize the plants are used as a natural medicine against a range of ailments.
