Scientific Name: Flacourtia indica. Common name: Governor's Plum, Gooseberry. An attractive large shrub or small tree with deep green glossy leathery leaves. Native to tropical Africa and Asia. It is a prolific producer of small purple red fruit with a orange yellow flesh having the flavor of a plum. This tree is easy to grow from seeds and can be used as a landscape tree urban environments. Fruits make excellent fresh eating, though, when mature, or can be used for a high-quality jelly or jam. Some trees have large sharp spines. The fruit is eaten by numerous wildlife species, especially birds and small rodents.
