Scientific Name: Terminalia catappa. Common names: Primarily Indian almond but also known as Bengal almond, Singapore almond, Sea almond and Umbrella tree. It is an erect and spreading tree that can reach 25 meters in height. Native to India, Malaysia and northern Australia. It grows naturally on rocky and sandy coast and is able to withstand flooding, salinity, ocean spray and high winds. It is widely cultivated in the tropical areas as a ornamental landscape item and grown for the deep shade its large leaves provide. The fruit is edible, tasting slightly acidic. The leaves (and also the bark) are used for various purposes in different traditional medicines. Easy to grow from seeds and is easily cared in the landscape.
