Scientific Name: Licania platypus. Common Name: Referred to as "Sansapote" by Julia Morton in her classic book, "Fruits of warm climates". In Belize it's known simply as "Monkey Apple". It is one of the more handsome of all the Central American trees. Commonly used as landscape tree because of its beautiful foliage which is tinged with bronze or red when young. A beautiful shade tree that produces fruit that is popular with children and animals. Native to Belize, Central America and northern South America. Easy to grow from seed the seeds will germinate in 60 to 90 days but the trees will take several years to bloom and produce fruit. The flesh of the fruit is yellow and juicy edible but somewhat fibrous and slightly acid.
