Scientific Name: Maranta arundinacea. Common Name: Arrowroot, Indian Arrowroot, Bermuda arrow-root. This plant has a perennial rhizome, ginger-like leaves and is widely cultivated in the tropics as an ornamental and for its edible rhizomes which yields an easily digested edible starch. Native to Mexico, Central America, and the northern part of South America. It has been introduced into tropical regions around the world where it has been extensively cultivated for starch production. The name arrowroot derives from its medicinal use as a poultice to remove arrow poison from wounds. It has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine plant is used as a natural source of calcium and in the treatment of indigestion, diarrhea and urinary infections. A very special plant that is easy to grow from seeds and is great as a container plant or as a outdoor landscape item in tropical regions. A perfect fast growing clumping plant to give your tropical or subtropical patio or courtyard a taste of the tropics.  It makes an excellent landscape plant that is easily cared for.  Tropical but can be wintered indoors in colder regions. Great for mass plantings and border areas.
