Scientific Name: Asclepias curassavica. Common name: 'scarlet milkweed, bloodflower, silkweed, Indian root'. This is a nice little tropical shrub that is great for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. Native to South America but has become naturalized in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. The flowers are orange and red and borne in terminal clusters that are 2-4 in (5.1-10.2 cm) across. Known as 'Polly Redhead' in Belize it is a respected medicine plant and is widely used in traditional medicine. Can tolerate and even thrive in dry, moist, and wet soils. Tropical but can be grown as an annual in temperate zones. Save the seeds in the fall and start them over the next year. Deer resistant so it is great in perennial borders and meadow gardens. Useful plant in attracting bees, butterflies and/or birds. Easy to grow from seeds.
