Scientific Name: Jatropha multifida. Common Name(s): Coral Plant, Physic Nut, Guatemala Rhubarb. This is a fast growing plant that likes heat and can tolerate drought conditions. Native to Mexico and Central America. The bright coral red flowers appear in flat-topped clusters on long stalks held high above the foliage. Flowers off and on all year long, and especially during hot weather. In colder areas, these make excellent potted patio plants that can be wintered inside. With its lacy large fern-like leaves, the tree itself is very attractive even when not in bloom. Easily propagated from seed and is relatively fast growing. They can be grown as year round houseplants or even as unique bonsai specimens. The seeds, leaves and sap are poisonous but are used in local traditional medicines.
