Scientific Name: Ziziphus jujuba. Common names: Chinese or Indian Jujube. The jujube is a graceful naturally drooping tree that is commonly grown in the tropical regions of the world for its edible fruits. Supposedly it originated in China and has been in cultivation for more than 4,000 years. It is a small, deciduous tree, growing to 25 to 30 feet tall in Belize. Extremely popular fruit throughout its natural range and is eagerly consumed by children, birds, and wild and domesticated animals. The wood is very hard and strong. Jujube cultivars vary in size and conformation, with some being very narrow in habit and others being more widespread. The fruits are used traditional medicine around the world, where they are believed to alleviate stress, calm nerves and purify blood quality. The fruit is also very soothing to the throat and decoctions of jujube have often been used to treat sore throats. Easy to grow from seed the seeds will germinate in 30 to 60 days and the plants will bloom and produce fruit in about three to four years. Can be used as a container plant. It can also be used as landscape tree in tropical regions. It is drought tolerant and is easily cared for in the landscape.
