Scientific Name: Areca catechu. Common Names: Betel Nut Palm, Betel Palm, Areca Nut Palm. It's original habitat is unknown but it is commonly cultivated and has naturalized in India, Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and the South Pacific Islands. The nuts contain a mild narcotic and native peoples have for millennia wrapped them mixed with the leaves of one of the pepper vines (piper methysticum) and chewed them to obtain a mild high.
