Scientific Name: Washingtonia robusta. Common names: 'Mexican Fan Palm'. Very popular ornamental landscape palm that is fast growing, robust, and makes a stunning landscape specimen. This palm can grow to over 100 feet tall. The skyscraper of the palm world it can be a striking sight when planted at equal intervals along a boulevard or in group plantings against high rise buildings. Native to the Baja and Sonora deserts regions of Mexico but planted widely in California, Arizona, Florida and elsewhere. It is fairly salt-resistant and is an excellent palm for urban planting in larger areas. It is drought tolerant, easy to grow from seeds, and is easily cared in the garden or landscape just needs sunlight and space. Seeds usually germinate within a month.
