Scientific Name: Hibiscus tiliaceus. Common name: Mahoe, Sea Hibiscus, Cotton Tree. This Hibiscus is a tropical evergreen shrub, or small spreading tree that can reach up to about 15 foot tall and wide. It is salt tolerant and procuces flowers almost all year long. The flowers open up and start out yellow and then as the day progresses they turn to orange, and the may even turn to red by night. Native to tropical Asia but cultivated throughout the tropics and has become naturalized in tropical America. The flowers and young leaves are edible. It likes well drained soils and a sunny location. It makes an attractive specimen tree in beach-front settings. Easy to grow from seeds.
