Scientific Name: Hibiscus sabdariffa. Common name: sorrel, roselle. Native to tropical Africa but cultivated throughout the tropics and has become naturalized in tropical America. Cultivated as a minor food crop for its edible calys, which is used to flavor drinks, make jams and jellies, and as a red dye. The calyx is located at the bottom of each flower, enclosing the bases of the five petals it is a fleshy bright red cup-like structure. The calyx is about 1 in (2.5 cm) in diameter. The calyces of roselle are used to make juices, sauces, jellies, wines and pies. The leaves, seeds, and shoots are also edible. Easy to grow from seeds. It likes well drained soils and a sunny location.
