Scientific Name: Licuala spinosa. An attractive tropical understory palm that has become popular as both a house plant and landscape ornamental in warmer regions. Sometimes called the Spiny Licuala and in Australia is known as the Mangrove Fan Palm. This palm is easy to start from seeds and is easy to grow. It is a clustering palm and requires little maintenance but does need some protection against frost which can damage the foliage. It can be slow growing but is happy in interior situations with adequate light and in moist shady or sunny areas outside.
