Scientific Name: Attalea cohune. Common name: 'Cohune Palm' , American Oil Palm. Rare in cultivation this spectacular palm could become a popular landscape item in tropical regions around the world. It is an attractive, tall, solitary, pinnate palm with a trunk that has been known to reach 60 to 100 feet high. It has long arching leaves that are useful for thatch roofing. Native to Mexico and Central America. It likes a sunny, well drained position. Slow growth initially but is an excellent addition to any tropical or subtropical garden. Can tolerate some cold and will usually recover and grow back from frost damage. Cooking oil is made from the seeds. Easy to grow from seeds.
